Youth Swim Classes

Ages 6 and up
Once a week for 8 weeks.
Our year round progressive swim classes were developed by the National YMCA
Aquatic Program. We teach the fundamentals of swimming to children ages 6 and
older and challenge each swimmer to move through the levels at his/her own pace.
To help you place your child in our youth swim program, below are some guidelines
for each level.
- Polliwog: Beginner level. No swimming skills necessary.If a child has been swimming in the preschool level at Pike or Eel and have turned 6 and not passed, they should sign up for this level.
- Guppy I: Is not afraid to put their face in the water, can jump into deep water without assistance. They are beginning to learn all strokes at the basic level: front crawl, back crawl, side stroke, breast stroke, elementary back stroke. If a child has been swimming in the preschool level at Ray and has turned 6, if they passed they should sign up for Guppy 1. If they did not pass, they should sign up for polliwog.
- Guppy II: Is not afraid of the water, can swim the length of the pool with at least half of it on their front. Can swim all strokes at the basic level for 60 feet: front crawl, back crawl, breast stroke, elementary back stroke. If a chold has been swimming in the preschool level at Starfish and has turned 6, if they passed, they should sign up for Guppy 2, if they did not pass, they should sign up for Guppy 1.
- Minnow: Can dive in the deep end with our without assistance, swim the lenght of the pool with at least half being front crawl with basic rotary breathing. Swim all strokes 75 feet: front crawl, back crawl, breast stroke, elementary back stroke, and side stroke for 45 feet.
- Fish: Can float on their front 3 minutes, tread water for 1 1/2 minutes, swim 50 yards front crawl without stopping. Swim all strokes for 25 yards with good arm and leg positioning.
- Flying Fish:Can float on their front for 6 minutes, tread water with a combination of kicks for 3 minutes, swim 75 yards front crawl without stopping. Swim all strokes for 50 yards, crawl with good rotary breathing, back crawl with roll, and bent arm and open turns. Breast stroke, elementary back stroke and side stroke with obvious glide and coordinated.
- Shark: Can float with clothes on. Can swim all stokes for 100 yards, front crawl with bilateral breathing, back crawl with roll and bent arm, elemenatry back stroke and breast stroke with glides, side stroke on alternating sides. Butterfly kick for 25 yards with fins, 15 yards without.
- Dolphins: The first half an hour will be spent in the classroom, where we will learn about basic water safety and how to prepare for an emergency. In the pool you will help a lead instructor with such things as taking attendance, demonstrating strokes, checking off skills etc.
- Killer Whales: The first half an hour will be spent in the classroom, where we will learn about basic first aid. In the pool you will help a lead instructor with such things as taking attendance, demostrating strokes, checking off skills etc.
